Paris Saint-Germain will play AS Monaco in the UEFA Champions League play-off round tonight.

This marks the first time these French teams are meeting in European competition, and it’s only the third knockout match in Champions League history featuring teams from the same country.

Previously, Lyon defeated Bordeaux in the 2009-10 quarter-finals, and last season, PSG dominated Brest with a score of 10-0 over two legs. This remains the largest winning margin in a two-legged tie between teams from the same nation.

In total, there have been 27 two-legged Champions League knockout ties between teams from the same country. Matches involving English teams are the most frequent, with 10 encounters, followed by 8 involving Spanish clubs.

There have been three instances of same-city knockout ties, with Inter Milan facing AC Milan three times, and Atletico Madrid meeting Real Madrid on three occasions.

The Chelsea vs. Arsenal quarter-final in 2003-04 was the first London derby in the Champions League.
