Diego Aguirre has clarified his commitment to Peñarol and what he expects from the club’s management. In a radio interview reported by FútbolUy, he expressed his desire to stay with the team for as long as possible but emphasized the need for the board to renew striker Maximiliano Silvera, which he has been requesting since his return.

“I’m very happy at Peñarol, I feel valued and I don’t think I could be better anywhere else,” Aguirre stated. He acknowledged that changes in football can happen, even with contracts in place. He is under contract until the end of 2026 but noted that nothing is guaranteed. Following the team’s early exit from the 2025 Copa Libertadores, he highlighted the need to move forward. “I’ve put that behind me and I’m already focused on next year. The aim is to be competitive, and that mindset is already here.”

Looking ahead, Aguirre reiterated that winning the Libertadores again is an important goal. “One day it will happen. The dream and belief have to stay alive. We’ve regained respect; previously teams would choose us as opponents, but now it’s different.”

Regarding Silvera, Aguirre was clear. “We need to renew him, they are aware of this. I’ve been saying it from the start. It’s important for them to trust us and listen to the technical staff. We make mistakes too, but that’s part of the process.” He expressed hope that the ongoing discussions would reach a conclusion soon.

The coach also praised young defender Nahuel Herrera as “a fantastic kid, a great professional, and an excellent person.” Additionally, he showed interest in speaking with Marcelo Bielsa. “I haven’t built a relationship with him yet, but many of his ideas and work are very intriguing. It’s always helpful to exchange thoughts with someone so experienced,” he added.
