According to La Tercera, Sevilla head coach Matías Almeyda praised Alexis Sánchez, highlighting that the Chilean forward brings valuable experience and a genuine passion for football. Almeyda noted that Sánchez prioritizes the joy of playing over financial incentives.
“I played until I was 30, then took a break and went to the countryside. I faced a tough time but returned to River at 35, which was my best period. I gained new insights and handled situations better. I see in Alexis a desire to enjoy football, which isn’t common. Many confuse enjoyment with making money,” Almeyda shared.
The coach clarified that Sánchez should not be viewed as a sole solution. “If he shares his experience, it will be beneficial. However, expecting Alexis to carry the entire team is a mistake. We need to operate as a team,” he stated.
Almeyda also mentioned Sánchez’s humility and dedication. “I appreciate his humility and willingness to listen. These are players who have achieved a lot and don’t need validation. He just wants to play like a child does. For me, football is about playing, having fun, and wanting to win. That spirit should never fade. I see it in him and César Azpilicueta, who is very active in training,” he said.
The Argentine coach wrapped up by commending Sánchez’s decision to join Sevilla despite more lucrative offers. “I don’t want to add pressure on him. He should contribute when needed, but I don’t expect him to be the solution to every problem; I want the team to perform as a unit. Alexis chose to come here despite other clubs having different offers. I appreciate this challenge we all share, and I am fully committed to it,” Almeyda concluded.
