Ruben Amorim has indicated that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes will be sidelined for an extended period due to a hamstring injury suffered against Aston Villa.
Fernandes left the field at half-time during the 2-1 loss at Villa Park, following a soft tissue injury.
This setback is significant, particularly as Amorim’s squad is already short due to the unavailability of Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Noussair Mazraoui, who are participating in the Africa Cup of Nations.
United’s next match is against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, and they will likely miss the key midfielder. Amorim provided a downbeat assessment of the situation, noting that he expects Fernandes to be out for a while. With a limited squad, Amorim gave Premier League debuts to Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey during the game against Aston Villa.
“It is really strange. During this year, especially now, we have so many problems, but we have to deal with it,” Amorim told Sky Sports regarding Fernandes’ injury.
“Fletcher debuted, which is good news, and the same goes for Lacey. We will look for solutions as we prepare for the next game.
“As a manager for six years, especially at Sporting, focusing on the academy is important. Every manager aims to promote academy players instead of spending money because it adds value to their work.
“I want to win and ensure that the academy players who come in are prepared. I’m here to support the club, whether through the academy or from abroad.
“I believe it’s a soft tissue injury [for Fernandes], so it will take some time. We will see.”
