Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim clarified his earlier comments following a surprising League Cup defeat to Grimsby Town. Speaking to reporters on Friday, he admitted that emotions influenced his statements after the match.
“Sometimes I want to leave, sometimes I want to stay for a long time,” Amorim shared ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Burnley. “Sometimes I enjoy working with my players, other times I don’t.”
Despite significant changes to the team’s frontline during the summer transfer window, United has managed to secure only one point from their first two league matches. The loss to Grimsby intensified scrutiny on Amorim, and his post-match comments added to the tension.
“This feels like a breaking point. Something needs to change,” he stated after the game. “The team’s performance spoke volumes.”
When asked if he considered resigning, Amorim responded: “I felt that way after the game, but not now. It fluctuates.”

He noted that it isn’t just the defeat that troubles him, but how they lost. “We know we can perform better,” he added. “At the moment, we are struggling with certain aspects, but the next match is an opportunity to improve.”
Since joining last November following Erik ten Hag’s departure, the 40-year-old has been candid with the media.
“I speak honestly, and after a loss like the one to Grimsby, I’ll express a range of feelings about my players. That’s just how I operate,” he explained.
Amorim also expressed frustration over reports that young talent Kobbie Mainoo requested a loan before the transfer window closes. “I want him to stay. He needs to earn his spot here,” he stated. “I get that players who don’t play are upset, but everyone will have a fair chance.”
Mainoo has not featured in United’s last two league matches, a 1-0 loss to Arsenal and a 1-1 draw with Fulham. His only starting appearance came in the match against Grimsby.
