Keith Andrews believes Wolves’ first goal against Brentford should have been ruled out due to a back pass just before it was scored.

Adam Armstrong scored for the visitors at the Gtech Community Stadium after Brentford had taken a two-goal lead during the first half.

Michael Kayode scored the opening goal with a header, and Dango Ouattara assisted Igor Thiago for his 19th Premier League goal this season. However, Wolves equalised late in the second half with a goal from Tolu Arokodare.

Brentford, now with three consecutive draws, missed the chance to close in on Chelsea and the top six.

“We are disappointed, but we need to understand why,” Andrews said post-match on BBC Match of the Day.

“We had chances and could have done better with our finishing and decision-making. In the second half, we needed to take control of the game like we did in the first, but we didn’t execute the basics well, and that’s frustrating.”

Just before Armstrong’s goal, Ladislav Krejci passed back to goalkeeper Jose Sa, who picked up the ball and rolled it to Santiago Bueno, starting the attack that led to the goal. Ouattara slightly touched the ball when challenging Krejci near the box.

The PGMOL stated they could not intervene since the incident was not part of the attacking phase; the ball had briefly changed possession before Jean-Ricner Bellegarde assisted.

“There are enough officials on the pitch to determine if it was a back pass,” Andrews commented. “The fact that I keep getting asked about it suggests many feel it was indeed a back pass.”

He continued, “I’m not using this as an excuse; I’m simply commenting on the incident that changed the game dynamic going into halftime.”
