Former Argentina national team player Ángel Di María has decided to leave Portuguese club Benfica after the 2025 Club World Cup.

According to a report on the Flash Score website on Friday (30 May), Di María will complete his emotional return to Lisbon and rejoin his childhood club, Rosario Central.

The 37-year-old has played in Portugal for the past two seasons, having previously enjoyed successful spells in Europe with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

The Argentinian player is set to officially return to his homeland to play for his childhood club, Rosario Central.

“There’s so much history to be made together. Welcome home, Ángel Di María,” wrote Rosario Central’s social media account, as quoted by Flash Score.

Di María, who announced his retirement from the Argentine national team in 2024, started his football career with Rosario Central in 2005, before joining Benfica as his first European club in 2007.

Angel Di Maria won 30 titles during his time at the European giant, as well as six international awards with Argentina, including two Copa América titles, one World Cup title and one Olympic title.

Following Benfica’s participation in next month’s Club World Cup in the United States, the winger will join Rosario Central. The Portuguese club are in Group C alongside Bayern Munich, Boca Juniors and Auckland City.
