Antoine Griezmann has broken his silence. On Thursday, the French international shared his thoughts during an interview with AS. He discussed his pursuit of his 200th goal with Atlético Madrid. “I wasn’t overwhelmed, but it definitely felt long. Especially last year, at the end of the season, when I wasn’t focused on this goal… Due to everything that happened in March and my absence from almost all competitions, it was very tough mentally. But once I got close to the 200 goals milestone, the goals started coming.” The forward admitted that this period took a toll on his mental state. “Yes, of course. I had so many hopes and dreams, and March wasn’t good for anyone. We lost La Liga and the Champions League. My morale dropped, and it impacted my game afterwards.”
However, the Mâcon native has found his form again. “Ultimately, I always want to play. But I understand I have to be professional, set an example for my teammates, and show the coach that I’m ready to play and earn my spot in the starting eleven. I want to play. I’m very happy here in Madrid, at Atlético, and I think that shows this season.” He has no regrets about extending his contract until June 2027 a few months ago. Griezmann explained his reasons. “Because I want more. I still have many minutes to play and the energy and mentality to be an important player at the club. I know I have to prove it to everyone, and I want to establish myself even further. As for the status of a legend, we’ll see in a few years.”
Despite his 461 matches and 203 goals, along with being the club’s all-time highest scorer, he feels he hasn’t yet reached legendary status. “I’m not one to claim titles or such things. I’ll think about that later. Right now, I need to keep proving, day by day, that I can play.” He still has many challenges ahead. “Winning a championship title, a Champions League, a cup… There’s still a lot to achieve, and I want to continue bringing joy to people and my teammates.” Regarding the Champions League, the former French international is haunted by the final against Real Madrid in Milan. “Yes, we still think about it. It’s true that if I had scored, we still wouldn’t have won, but it would have boosted the team at a crucial moment in the match when we were playing really well. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out.”
Finally, the former FC Barcelona player was asked about his future. “In the end, we have always talked about it. It’ll be the case from the day I arrived until I leave. But as I said, I’m very happy here. Everyone knows that MLS is my dream, my goal, but I have a contract, I want to extend it and continue to be important.” Griezmann is clear about his intentions. He wishes to stay in Madrid and is even open to remaining longer than planned. This is significant news from Antoine Griezmann, who has scored 5 goals in 16 appearances this season across all competitions for Atlético.
