Lionel Messi has not yet made a decision about playing for Argentina in the FIFA World Cup this summer in North America, according to national team coach Lionel Scaloni.
The renowned player, who currently plays for Inter Miami, will turn 39 during the tournament, which starts on June 11 and ends on July 19. He holds the record as Argentina’s top scorer with 115 goals.
Scaloni mentioned that Messi has “earned the right” to take his time with this decision, noting that there is “no rush.”
“You know my perspective,” Scaloni said. “I’ll do everything possible to ensure he’s part of the team. It’s important for football that he participates. Ultimately, it’s his decision based on how he feels physically and mentally.”
“It’s a challenge because not just Argentinians want to see him play; everyone wants to see him,” he added.
“I want him to be part of the team. It’s his choice to make. He’s earned the right to consider this thoughtfully. We’re not in a hurry. Whatever decision he makes will be best for him and the team. We hope to see him there.”
Additionally, Scaloni confirmed that Messi will participate in two friendlies in Buenos Aires against Mauritania on Friday and Zambia on Tuesday.
“It’s a special chance for the Argentinian fans to see him play at home, and it’s something we all cherish,” Scaloni said.
Argentina is placed in Group J for the World Cup, alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. Their title defense will begin on June 16 against Algeria in Kansas City.
