Argentina will face Mauritania in an international friendly on Friday, continuing their preparations for the 2026 World Cup at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires.
Argentina team news
This March international window has presented challenges for Argentina. It started with the cancellation of the Finalissima match against Spain and complications in securing friendly opponents.
Argentina initially named a 28-man squad on March 18, but head coach Lionel Scaloni has since added four more players to address late withdrawals.
Players such as Lisandro Martínez, Giovani Lo Celso, and Lautaro Martínez were ruled out, with additional absentees confirmed as the days went on.
Leonardo Balerdi also had to withdraw due to an injury sustained during Olympique Marseille’s match against Lille.
In response, Franco Mastantuono and Joaquín Panichelli were called up, while Lucas Martínez Quarta joined the team due to Balerdi’s injury. Agustín Giay was added following Gonzalo Montiel’s exit.
Despite these challenges, Scaloni has a solid squad in place, retaining the core of the World Cup-winning team as they gear up for the 2026 tournament.
Lionel Messi is included in the squad and is expected to participate. He has been managing his playing time at Inter Miami. Scaloni has indicated that the captain will control his minutes with the national team.
