Argentin Papu Gomez, who tested positive for a banned substance in November 2022 while playing for Sevilla FC, received a two-year suspension for doping. This sanction, effective eleven months after the test, did not prevent him from competing and winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. Now back in action this season, the former Atalanta player has rejuvenated his career in Serie B with Padua.

On Saturday, Gomez made his highly anticipated return in a match against Venice, but couldn’t prevent his team’s 2-0 defeat. Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, he expressed his commitment to this new challenge: “I didn’t come here to be a tourist. I aim to take Padua as high as possible; I want to bring this team back to Serie A.” He also mentioned turning down offers from Argentina and the UAE to focus on the Italian project.
