Liverpool manager Arne Slot describes this season as the toughest of his career.
The Dutch coach led Liverpool to a Premier League title in his first season, but now his team is struggling with inconsistency.
Currently in sixth place, Liverpool has lost eight matches this season—twice as many as last year—after a recent defeat to Manchester City.
If they fail to qualify for the Champions League, Slot admits it would be unacceptable for the club.
“If we don’t qualify for the Champions League, it has not been an acceptable season,” he said during a press conference ahead of the match against Sunderland.
“When I joined, I mentioned that we could only sign Federico Chiesa after a season in the Europa League. This shows how vital Champions League football is for the club’s operations, and I understand that completely.”
Arne Slot calls this season his toughest yet at Liverpool
When asked about the difficulties of this season, he replied, “That is fair to say, by a mile. In my previous seasons, there were mostly positives. I’ve never lost two games in a row like this before. It is unusual for both me and the players, who are not used to so many losses or draws.”
“It’s always a challenge to motivate the team after a loss and to remind them after a win that they need to stay grounded. This season has been more challenging for me as well.”
“However, there are still positive takeaways. I notice improvements in the team. As a manager, while results are important, ensuring the players grow is also crucial to avoid bigger issues.”
“I believe everyone, except those who are injured, can play at the necessary intensity every three days in the Premier League.”
“Our performances have improved significantly compared to the start of the season. I’m not just referencing the first six games but rather when we began our double match schedule, which included midweek European and domestic cup matches.”
“In the first six matches, our only challenge was a tough win against Everton, but since starting our double schedule, we have dropped many points.”
