Arne Slot has shared his plans for Liverpool’s young player, Rio Ngumoha, following his 70-minute appearance against Barnsley.
The 17-year-old had a strong performance in Liverpool’s 4-1 victory in the FA Cup.
Before the match, Slot expressed worry about overworking Ngumoha, and his substitution in the second half highlighted that concern.
However, Slot envisions a larger role for the winger. In a press briefing after the game, he outlined how he aims to gradually introduce him to regular first-team football.

Ngumoha has played only 53 minutes in the Premier League this season.
He was active in Liverpool’s early-season League Cup matches, but the 73 minutes he played against Barnsley was his longest stint since October.
Discussing Ngumoha’s substitution, Slot said: “I believe it was cramp. This highlights that a Premier League game is more intense than today’s match.”
“It’s great for him to complete 70 minutes, but being ready for 90 in the Premier League is still a challenge.”
Reaching and sustaining that intensity will be tough for Ngumoha, but it’s what Slot wants from him.
“It’s impressive for both him and Liverpool that a 17-year-old is getting substantial minutes. Let’s hope he continues to progress towards playing a full 90 minutes in the Premier League,” Slot added.
Questions have arisen about whether Ngumoha will become a regular in the squad, but Slot’s recent comments indicate he might be considering this more seriously.
This could be related to the club’s choice not to bring in another wide player this month. Whatever the reason, Ngumoha is likely to see more action as the season progresses.
Ngumoha’s role changes in win against Barnsley
When substitutions were made around the hour mark, Liverpool’s attack saw some shifts. Ngumoha moved to the right wing, while Cody Gakpo took his place on the left.
Despite the level of opposition, Ngumoha held his ground, demonstrating his capability to contribute from either side. This versatility offers Slot another option if injuries occur and gives the 17-year-old an alternative route into the starting lineup.
Ngumoha is just starting his journey at Liverpool, but trusting young talents has yielded positive results for clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal recently. Slot appears open to providing those chances.
