Arsenal are reportedly in pole position to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi in this summer’s transfer market. However, sudden interest from Real Madrid has the potential to disrupt the Gunners’ plans.
The talented defensive midfielder has caught the eye of a number of European clubs after impressing for Sociedad and the Spanish national team in recent years. He was close to joining Liverpool last season but opted to stay at the club. Now, his chances of leaving are growing.
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal were close to completing a move for Zubimendi in January and remain favourites to land him. Sky Sports transfer expert Dharmesh Sheth has even called a move for Zubimendi to Arsenal a near certainty.
“I would say that Zubimendi’s move to Arsenal is almost certain. Last summer, Liverpool were close to signing him, but suddenly there was a change of heart. Now, a year later, he is very likely to join Arsenal. It is possible that Arsenal have intervened at that time and convinced Zubimendi to wait for them,” Sheth said.
However, Spanish outlets Fichajes and AS report that Real Madrid are also very serious about pursuing Zubimendi. With Luka Modric out of contract this summer and Dani Ceballos’ future uncertain, Madrid could see Zubimendi as an ideal replacement.
On the other hand, Arsenal also have a strong case for Zubimendi to be their first choice. With Jorginho and Thomas Partey likely to leave, the Gunners need a new defensive midfielder to partner Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.
Additionally, Zubimendi has a close relationship with Mikel Arteta and played alongside Mikel Merino at Sociedad, which could be a big factor in his decision. Should he end up joining Arsenal, Zubimendi’s presence would provide a huge boost to the North Londoners in their bid to compete at the top of the Premier League and in Europe.
Now, the decision is in Zubimendi’s hands, will he choose a new challenge in England with Arsenal or accept the temptation of La Liga giants, Real Madrid?
