Arsenal are reportedly close to completing the transfer of Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi. The 26-year-old is set to undergo a medical in the near future, after which he will officially join the Gunners. The north London club is willing to pay his release clause of £51 million.
Zubimendi had previously turned down an offer from Liverpool last summer. However, after impressing in 44 games for Real Sociedad in the 2023/24 season, Arsenal have managed to convince him to move to the Emirates Stadium.
Despite being linked with a move to the Premier League, the midfielder has remained tight-lipped about his future this season. According to the BBC, the transfer is now only a matter of final formalities, as all paperwork and a payment structure have been agreed.
Zubimendi’s arrival would mark Mikel Arteta’s first signing of the summer transfer window. However, Arsenal are not stopping there. They are also targeting two strikers: Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig and Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP.
Arsenal have been criticised for their lack of a striker with a proven track record of scoring goals and leading a club to major trophies. However, Arteta appears ready to address these concerns. Gyökeres, aged 26, has scored an impressive 54 goals in just 52 games this season, and his release clause is reportedly set at £84 million.
However, Sporting are reportedly willing to accept offers in excess of £60 million. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Sesko has scored 21 goals this season and is back on Arsenal’s radar after being a target for some time.
In addition to looking for new players, Arsenal are trying to keep hold of their current squad. New contract talks are underway with several players, including Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, Gabriel, Leandro Trossard, Thomas Partey and two talented young players: Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.
By moving quickly in the transfer market, Arsenal have demonstrated their commitment to competing for trophies again next season.
