There’s already discussion about the players Arsenal might pursue in January, although it’s expected to be a quiet window.

After a significant summer with eight new arrivals, Mikel Arteta’s team is not expected to spend heavily this winter.

Nevertheless, Andrea Berta is active behind the scenes, assessing potential options for January and beyond to enhance Arsenal’s squad.

Arsenal has presented significant challenges to Real Madrid this year. They first defeated them 5-1 on aggregate in the Champions League last season, which was a disappointing outcome for Los Blancos and contributed to Carlo Ancelotti’s exit.

Then, in the summer, Arsenal signed Martin Zubimendi, who has proven to be an excellent addition.

Despite various reports, Arsenal did not go for Rodrygo last summer due to financial considerations. Now, Berta has shifted focus to one of Rodrygo’s teammates: Victor Valdepenas.

Fabrizio Romano mentioned in October that Arsenal was keeping an eye on Valdepenas’ situation in Spain. ESPN Deportes confirmed this, but there’s a downside.

The young defender reportedly prefers to stay at Real Madrid, having just debuted this month. His future may rely on how the club evaluates him, with offers expected in the summer window.

Why Arsenal might be better off looking elsewhere for defensive help

Valdepenas is a promising talent, which explains Arsenal’s interest.

The 19-year-old, who plays as a left-footer, can operate as both a centre-back and left-back, offering versatility. However, Arsenal already has Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie for those positions. They also moved on from Jakub Kiwior, suggesting they do not need another player with similar skills.

Instead, Arsenal might benefit from strengthening their right-back position. Ben White has sustained another injury, which raises concerns about relying on him throughout the season.

Berta would be more strategic in seeking a backup right-back instead of adding another left-sided defender to the squad.
