Mikel Arteta and Fabian Hurzeler have resolved their differences regarding recent comments about Arsenal’s game strategy this season.
Hurzeler had criticized Arsenal for time-wasting during set pieces after Brighton’s 1-0 loss to them last week. He remarked, “I think there was only one team that tried to play football today,” expressing his discontent with such tactics.
On Friday, Hurzeler mentioned that he spoke with Arteta about his remarks and expressed his respect for Arteta and his team’s efforts. He acknowledged that if Arsenal were to win the Premier League, they would deserve it, but his initial feelings were driven by emotion and his commitment to his principles.
Mikel Arteta appreciates conversation with Fabian Hurzeler
In his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against Everton, Arteta referred to Hurzeler as a “fantastic coach” doing excellent work at Brighton.
“It was a personal conversation. His previous comments reflect positively on him as a person,” Arteta said. “I appreciate that. He is a fantastic coach, and the work he’s doing at Brighton is really good. That’s fine.”
Arsenal has also faced criticism for their physical style of play this season. When asked about the importance of playing attractive football, Arteta responded, “It’s about playing in the best way possible to increase your chances of winning. That’s it.”
He highlighted the intensity of the Premier League, referencing a recent Champions League match between Newcastle and Barcelona. He noted, “Barcelona is known for being exciting, but against Newcastle, they faced a different kind of challenge that they don’t encounter in Spain.”
