Mikel Arteta described Arsenal’s 3-2 home loss to Man Utd on Saturday as a “very painful” experience after they lost “in a really strange way.”
United staged a comeback to surprise the Gunners and hurt their Premier League title ambitions.
Arsenal initially took the lead due to an own goal by Lisandro Martinez. However, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu turned the game around for United. Although Mikel Merino scored a late equalizer, Matheus Cunha netted the winner shortly after.
Mikel Arteta reflects on unexpected Arsenal loss to Man Utd
“First, you have to congratulate Man Utd for their win,” Arteta told Sky Sports. “The way it happened was quite unusual.
“We dominated the first half hour, scored a goal, and had two excellent chances but ended up giving them a goal, which is not like us.
“This shifted the momentum. After that, we dropped our performance levels, and they seized their opportunities.
“Credit to them; in important matches, those moments can be game-changers.
“We held onto some negativity and lost our fluidity. But after we made substitutions and scored, it felt like at 2-2, we were back in the game.
“Then one long ball changed everything, and Cunha scored.
“It’s a painful loss, but we need to support the players who have given us great moments. We all want to win.
“We must learn from this. Defeats are part of the journey, and it’s essential to remind them of their quality.”
