Mikel Arteta has urged Arsenal to demonstrate their strength to title rivals after increasing their lead at the top of the table.
Arsenal defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 on Sunday, putting them five points ahead of Manchester City, having played one extra game. This victory addressed recent doubts about the team’s mindset after dropping points in earlier matches.
Having given up a two-goal lead to draw against 20th-placed Wolves earlier in the week, Arteta expressed satisfaction with his team’s response. He previously described the Wolves game as ‘like the end of the world’ and now wants Arsenal to make a statement to their title competitors.
“Outstanding. You have to consider the context, and that is the beauty of football,” Arteta remarked after the Tottenham match, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live. “When you go to Wolves and drop points in the final moments, it’s hard to understand how that happened. It really feels like the end of the world. However, you get another chance, and that’s the beauty of it. In a tough stadium against our rivals, we showed how much it means to us and our supporters.”
“We raise everyone’s spirits immediately. Now it’s time to show our true character. This is about our attitude and how we respond to challenges.”
“We can reflect on whether this defines our season or if it’s an opportunity for us to bounce back.”
