Ashvir Singh Johal creates history: First Sikh to manage in Britain’s top five leagues

Ashvir Singh Johal has made history as the first Sikh to lead a professional British football club, while also being the youngest manager in England’s top five divisions. At just 30, Johal has been handed the reins of Morecambe FC, following a takeover by the Panjab Warriors consortium. His appointment came soon after the dismissal of Derek Adams earlier this week.

Although this is Johal’s first senior managerial role, his path has been shaped by over a decade of hard work. He began coaching at just 16, securing his FA Level 1 qualification while still in school. In his teenage years, Johal could often be seen laying cones, running PE lessons, and volunteering at Leicester City, gradually rising from academy sessions with U7s to U18s, all while balancing his education.

Who is Ashvir Singh Johal?

In 2022, Johal got his first taste of senior football as an assistant coach at Wigan Athletic under ex-Arsenal defender Kolo Toure. He described this stint as crucial for learning about leadership and professionalism. Later, he joined another Arsenal legend, Cesc Fabregas, as assistant manager of Como’s Primavera (U19) team in Italy.

However, Brexit-related work permit hurdles cut short his Italian journey, forcing him back to England. He then took over Notts County’s B-team, bridging the gap between youth and senior squads. Earlier this summer, Johal achieved a major milestone by completing his UEFA Pro Licence, graduating alongside ex-England star Jack Wilshere. Within weeks, he was handed his first managerial post at Morecambe.

Morecambe’s New Beginning

Johal’s arrival comes at a tricky time. Morecambe were recently relegated from League Two and had their season delayed after National League suspended them for compliance issues. Their first competitive match is now set for this Saturday against Altrincham.

Speaking to the BBC earlier, Johal said he had been preparing for this chance for years.

“I’ve been working hard for the last five or six years. I’ve known I wanted to be a manager. How do I learn from the right people? How do I be around the right environments? So that when I get the opportunity to be a manager, I’m successful from the start.”

For Johal, this role is more than personal glory.

“This is about Morecambe Football Club. It’s about building a team that can perform on the pitch. That’s our priority this season.”
