Aston Villa defeated Manchester United 2-1 in their match at Villa Park on Sunday, December 21. Morgan Rogers scored both goals for Villa, while Matheus Cunha netted one for United.
The match showcased a mix of performance levels. Manchester United had more control and likely deserved a better result. With this win, Aston Villa remains in third place with 36 points from 17 matches, while United sits seventh with 26 points from the same number of games.
Aston Villa vs Manchester United Revealed United’s Challenges
Manchester United had significantly more touches in the attacking third. However, Villa capitalized on defensive lapses, with Rogers scoring both goals due to Leny Yoro’s failures to block his shots.
Yoro, who started strong at United, has struggled recently, presenting challenges for manager Ruben Amorim, especially with Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire unavailable.
Despite United’s high pressing and winning the ball back frequently, they struggled to convert opportunities, often relying solely on Benjamin Sesko to penetrate the defense. Bruno Fernandes and Cunha provided several through passes to support him.
Had Sesko been more decisive in front of goal, he might have scored twice in the first half. His failure to beat goalkeeper Emi Martinez one-on-one highlighted his current scoring trend of just two goals in 14 matches for United.
Cunha worked diligently in the attacking half, supported by Patrick Dorgu’s impressive runs down the left. Cunha earned his goal from a Dorgu assist after he capitalized on a turnover in the final third.
However, Cunha missed a key opportunity to equalize in the second half when he failed to connect with a free header from another Dorgu cross. He has now scored three goals for his new club, but United’s accuracy issues in the attacking area ultimately led to their defeat on Sunday.
