The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to take place in North America this summer, with Atlanta among the cities hosting several matches. To mark the occasion, the Atlanta World Cup Host Committee and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United organized a free viewing party for the World Cup Final Draw at Buckhead Village last month.
On3 attended the event, which included various activities, giveaways, live entertainment, and a live broadcast of the Final Draw. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens was present and spoke about the city’s preparations for the upcoming sporting event.
“We love showcasing our great city,” Dickens shared with On3 and other reporters. “We excel at hosting large events, and people appreciate our culture. Atlanta is excited for the World Cup, and we want to ensure everyone here enjoys it as well. We want the World Cup to be an event for Atlanta, not just in Atlanta.”
Atlanta to Make U.S. Sports History During the World Cup
Atlanta is one of 16 North American cities selected to host matches. The city, along with Los Angeles and New York/New Jersey, will host eight matches, while Dallas will host nine. Atlanta and Dallas will both host semifinal matches, Miami will hold the third-place match, and New York/New Jersey will host the championship match.
Dan Corso, president of the Atlanta World Cup Host Committee, spoke at the Final Draw event about the significance of this moment for the city. “We are now one of only two cities in the U.S. to host both the Summer Olympics and the World Cup, alongside LA, which is a great honor,” Corso explained to reporters. “In the past 30 years, we’ve hosted college football championships, Super Bowls, and All-Star Games, but we’ve never had the World Cup.”
Atlanta’s matches will begin on Monday, June 15, featuring Spain against Cabo Verde. The city will also host a semifinal match on Wednesday, July 15.
