Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Espanyol in the 29th round of the LaLiga at the RCDE stadium in Barcelona on Saturday night IST.
Cesar Azpilicueta put Atletico ahead in the first half, only for Javi Puado to equalise after the break.
The result leaves Diego Simeone’s side third in the standings with 57 points from 28 games.
However, they are three points behind second-placed Real Madrid and six behind leaders Barcelona, according to the Spanish league website.
Real Madrid play Leganes on Sunday morning at 01:30 IST, while Barcelona host Girona on Sunday
Atletico took the lead in the 38th minute through Azpilicueta.
The goal started when Alexander Sorloth headed the ball towards Azpilicueta, who was just outside the box.
The Spanish right-back volleyed the ball into the net to make it 1-0.
Espanyol equalised in the second half through Javi Puado’s 71st-minute penalty after centre-back Clement Lenglet fouled Leandro Cabrera.
Puado’s shot to the top right corner was not stopped by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak. The match ended 1-1
