Austin FC is close to making history in the U.S. Open Cup. The team will play in its first-ever semifinal on Wednesday night against Minnesota United. If they win, they will move on to the final on October 1, which will take place at Q2 Stadium.

Austin reached this stage after a thrilling quarterfinal against San Jose Earthquakes. They equalized twice during regulation and extra time; goalkeeper Brad Stuver made nine saves and stopped two penalties in the shootout, allowing Austin to advance. They have been on a strong run lately, winning four of their last six away matches in all competitions. Their recent record at Allianz Field includes wins in 2023 and 2024, along with a 1-1 draw earlier this year.

However, Minnesota presents a significant challenge. The Loons are currently second in the Western Conference, following a convincing 3-1 win over league leaders San Diego last weekend, which narrowed the points gap to just two. Their cup journey includes victories over Louisville City, St. Louis, and Chicago. Even after losing their top scorer, Tani Oluwaseyi, to Villarreal in the summer, Minnesota remains competitive in multiple areas.

Statistically, they have the lowest possession rate in MLS at 38.9 percent, yet they allow just 1.1 goals per game. Their tight defensive setup, fast counterattacks, and strength on set pieces—scoring 19 goals from set plays this season—highlight the challenges they pose.

The matchup will feature two talented MLS All-Star goalkeepers, with Stuver facing off against Dayne St. Clair. With a chance at a first-ever final on the line, both teams will approach the game at Allianz Field knowing that every moment is crucial.
