Banyana Banyana of South Africa secured a 1-0 victory against Japan in Osaka today, marking a strong recovery from their recent 5-0 defeat to the same team. The match served as part of their preparation for the upcoming Women Africa Cup of Nations competition in Morocco next month.
In anticipation of the game, Banyana coach Desiree Ellis implemented three changes to the starting lineup from Saturday’s match. Goalkeeper Kaylin Swart replaced Andile Dlamini, while Bongeka Gamede and Thembi Kgatlana came in for Nonhalnhla Mthandi and Gabriela Moodaly-Salgado, respectively.
Japan, ranked fifth in the world, also adjusted their lineup following the previous encounter. However, this time they posed a lesser challenge, allowing Banyana Banyana to secure their victory through a well-timed header from Linda Motlhalo.
With Banyana Banyana ranked 57th globally, the win against the higher-ranked Japan is a significant achievement for the team as they gear up for the continental tournament.
