The contentious match will not take place. Earlier on Tuesday, the Liga announced the cancellation of the Villarreal-Barça match scheduled for December 21 in Miami. Due to significant controversy in Spain over players opposing the match being held in the United States, the Liga decided to change its plans, and the match will now be held in Villarreal. In a statement, Barça expressed regret over the cancellation of the game in the U.S.
“FC Barcelona respects the decision to cancel the match against Villarreal in Miami for the 17th round of Liga, just as it respected and committed to playing it at the time. FC Barcelona regrets the missed opportunity to enhance the competition’s image in a strategic market, which is crucial for growth and resource generation for everyone’s benefit. The club values the unconditional support and affection of its fans in the United States and deeply regrets that they will not be able to attend this official match in their country,” stated the Spanish champions on their website, noting the loss of several million euros.
