Barros Schelotto Keeps Winning with Vélez

Vélez fans celebrated recently as their team won the Argentine Super Cup. According to ESPN, Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s team defeated Central Córdoba 2-0 at the Gigante de Arroyito, with Jano Gordon scoring both goals. This victory marks the coach’s second title with the club and the fifth in his career.

Barros Schelotto previously experienced success at Lanús, winning the 2013 Copa Sudamericana. At Boca Juniors, he secured two league titles in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons. With Vélez, he first won the International Super Cup against Estudiantes, and now has added another national achievement.

After the match, the coach commended his team for overcoming a challenging start to the season. He noted that upon his arrival, Vélez had not won in eight games. He acknowledged the contributions of new player Rodrigo Aliendro, who provided calmness in midfield, praised Manuel Lanzini’s influence in the final’s second half, and highlighted Maher Carrizo, a young player already attracting interest from River Plate and the City Football Group.

Barros Schelotto also mentioned the importance of veteran defender Lisandro Magallán, calling him a key influence on the team. Regarding Gordon’s performance, he revealed that the forward’s second goal came from a set-piece play they practiced in training.

Looking ahead, the coach stated that while the Copa Libertadores is a significant goal, his immediate focus is on the upcoming league game against Huracán. He acknowledged having received offers from other clubs but chose Vélez for its strong squad and the opportunity to compete at a higher level.

He concluded by saying that the true challenge for Vélez will come in the quarterfinals against Racing, which he believes will reveal the team’s potential in South America’s top tournament.
