Bayer Leverkusen Welcomes Former Real Madrid Defender Vazquez

Lucas Vazquez, former right back for Real Madrid, has signed with Bayer Leverkusen until 2027, as announced by the club on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old, who has won the Champions League five times, made the move on a free transfer after becoming a free agent when his contract with Madrid ended this summer.

Vazquez underwent a medical in Madrid and could feature in Leverkusen’s next match against Werder Bremen on Saturday.

He expressed his enthusiasm about continuing his career at Leverkusen.

Vazquez credited former Leverkusen coach and current Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, along with former teammate Dani Carvajal, for influencing his decision to join the German side.

Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, noted that Vazquez brings valuable experience from his successful tenure at Real Madrid and is expected to be a key player for the team.

The club sought a right-back after Jeremie Frimpong’s transfer to Liverpool last season.

Aside from a brief period at Espanyol, Vazquez spent his entire career with Real Madrid, where he clinched four La Liga titles.

His playing time at right back decreased with the arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold, prompting Vazquez to seek new opportunities.

Leverkusen, who won the domestic double two seasons ago, has seen significant changes this summer, with key players departing, including Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, and Frimpong to the Premier League, along with Jonathan Tah joining Bayern Munich and coach Xabi Alonso moving to Real Madrid.
