According to Clarín, Sebastián Beccacece clarified in Guayaquil that statements attributed to him regarding Ecuador’s upcoming match with Argentina were false. The Argentine coach, who secured Ecuador’s spot in the 2026 World Cup within a year, stated he never predicted a victory over the current champions. “I never make comments before a match. I always choose respect. I’m not that kind of coach,” he said.

Ecuador, coming off a goalless draw in Paraguay, remains in a solid qualifying position, but Beccacece noted that his team needs to improve consistency. He dedicated a significant portion of his press conference to discussing Lionel Scaloni’s project. “Argentina is not just the reigning World Cup and Copa América champion; they’ve had seven years of work with a sophisticated and natural style. They typically control matches and set the pace wherever they play,” he explained.

Beccacece, who previously worked with Scaloni on Jorge Sampaoli’s staff before the 2018 World Cup, highlighted the challenge ahead. “They’re unpredictable. They can attack through the middle or the sides, use two strikers, or have wingers come inside and fullbacks push forward. The key will be to make them uncomfortable and see if we can take control of possession,” he said.

The coach, now 11 matches into his role with Ecuador, also reflected on Lionel Messi’s farewell to World Cup qualifying after Argentina’s win over Venezuela at the Monumental. “It’s touching. His longevity is remarkable. He celebrates a goal in MLS like it’s his first. That teaches us something. He may not realize it, but his passion is a lesson for everyone,” Beccacece remarked, showing his admiration for the Argentine captain.
