Dark clouds are gathering.

A serious blow to Costa’s reputation.

Details: According to CNN Portugal, Lisbon Benfica president Rui Costa may face criminal charges linked to a €76,000 payment received from Russia.

This situation arises from current EU rules that ban financial connections with entities tied to the Russian state.

The payment was associated with the transfer of Argentine defender Germán Conti, who moved to Lokomotiv in 2023. However, Portuguese bank BCP blocked the transaction, leading to the money being returned to the Russian club’s account at Raiffeisenbank. The case has been forwarded to the Portuguese prosecutor’s office.

In July, Rui Costa was called for questioning regarding allegations of money laundering, but he asked to delay the session due to club commitments.

Benfica’s legal team suggests that the prosecution might close the case if a fine is paid. Under Portuguese law, violating sanctions can lead to up to five years in prison or a financial penalty if actions are deemed unintentional.

Reminder: Benfica is worried about a virus outbreak ahead of the Porto match.
