Benjamin Mendy has surprised many with his recent career move. Without a club since leaving FC Zürich, where he struggled to regain form, the 31-year-old Frenchman was searching for a new challenge. On September 16, Polish media reported his imminent transfer to Pogoń Szczecin, which was officially confirmed by the club the next day. “Benjamin Mendy joins Pogoń Szczecin! The 2018 World Cup winner with France has signed a one-year contract with the club, along with an option for another year. He joins as a free agent.” His arrival has sparked various reactions, with some celebrating the signing of the World Cup champion and others expressing skepticism about his playing condition and physical fitness.
A talked-about recruit
Excited to explore this new league, the former Marseille and AS Monaco player needed to focus on his physical preparation. Last season, he played just eight matches across all competitions with FC Zürich (1 assist, 352 minutes), and his last appearance was on April 12, 2025. After almost five months off the field, the native of Longjumeau dedicated himself to his fitness. Initially listed for the reserves in early November, he was eventually included in the first team squad for a match against Wisła Płock on November 2, where he did not play. A few days later, on November 9, he made his season debut in a 2-1 loss to Jagiellonia Białystok, coming off the bench for five minutes.
This first step is significant for the player, whose situation remains a topic of discussion in Poland. Many are curious about his abilities, as they have yet to see him play extensively. According to Goal in Poland, “It’s one of the most unexpected transfers in Ekstraklasa history. Benjamin Mendy, former Manchester City player and World Cup champion with France, has joined Pogoń. He is only the second World Cup winner, following Lukas Podolski, to join Ekstraklasa. Mendy was once regarded as one of the best defenders in the world, with Manchester City paying a record €57.5 million for him from AS Monaco. His career has had its ups and downs.” Nevertheless, he has persevered.
Mendy discusses his choice
The discreet player, who initially spoke only on his club’s official site upon his arrival, gave his first interview to Goal. He shared insights into his decision to join the Polish club. “First, I want to thank the Pogoń management for their interest in me, which allowed me to continue my career in excellent conditions. I’ve talked about the atmosphere and the supporters, but the club’s thoughtful approach was crucial… It was important for me to have time to regain my fitness. I didn’t want to play immediately after signing the contract; stepping onto the field unprepared wouldn’t benefit anyone—neither me nor the club.”
He continued: “At Pogoń, there was complete understanding of my situation. Not only did the club agree to patiently wait for my return to fitness, but they also organized an excellent training plan. Pogoń is top-notch in terms of specialists. Additionally, the challenge of winning a trophy is significant… This influenced my decision. Contributing to a historical victory is an exciting challenge, and I believe Pogoń is on the right path, having reached the Polish Cup final twice recently. I’m committed to helping them achieve this.” He is aware of the expectations around him but preferred to take his time.
Delayed debut
“I joined Olympique de Marseille at a young age, and everyone knows the pressure that comes with that club… I’ve learned to manage that pressure throughout my career. If you’re performing well, it’s fine, but if not, it can be tough… I was happy with how quickly I recovered. Physically, I felt good. Generally, no player will say they don’t want to play. It’s up to the coach. However, no training or friendly match can replace an official game, especially at this level. It was better to wait rather than come back too soon and jeopardize the season. The goal was to be ready when the time came. Regarding my decision to join Pogoń, I contacted Kamil (Grosicki) just before signing. I had a couple of questions for him.”
Mendy shared more about their exchanges, noting they had never played together. “I remember him from Ligue 1. He was already very dangerous back then, causing trouble for opponents. As for our contacts? He played with Kamil Glik in the Polish national team, and I played with Glik at Monaco, so it was easy to find Grosicki’s contact details. He’s a great player and leader. It’s a pleasure to look him in the eye before a match; you can see his passion for winning.” Mendy is still acclimating to both the club and the league. “Honestly, I didn’t expect this! The league is very physical, dynamic, and of an excellent standard. I’m also very impressed by the Ekstraklasa stadiums.”
The Frenchman reflects on his future
He was thrilled by the atmosphere and the look of the stadiums. “Everywhere, the stands are packed to the brim. As for Pogoń, I felt at home from the very first moment. When Tan and president Alex showed me videos of our stadium, the match schedules, and the general atmosphere, I was surprised. I asked them, ‘Wow, is this our stadium?’ People outside Poland don’t realize how beautiful Polish football is.” On the field, after his debut three days ago, Mendy feels positive. “Personally, I’m happy to be back. But collectively… it’s hard to be satisfied. We had a great chance to secure three points, and then in the final moments, everything changed. It was unbelievable.”
His team, which had over thirty attempts on goal, lost 2-1 but failed to convert more chances. “It’s all about effectiveness. That’s what cost us the victory. The result is certainly disappointing, but our play isn’t. I believe we are improving, and I’m convinced that we will be even stronger after the international break. We just need to be more effective.” Finally, under contract until June 2026, Mendy was asked about his future and life after football. “I think I will stay involved in football. I’m not sure in what role yet, but I can see myself in the football community, not outside it.” For now, Benjamin Mendy aims to enjoy his time on the pitch in Poland.
