Marcelo Bielsa is “excited” to lead his Uruguay team against top international competition.

The former Leeds United manager is back in England for a highly awaited friendly match tonight.

Bielsa is well-known in West Yorkshire for helping Leeds return to the Premier League after 16 years. Now, he will coach La Celeste at Wembley Stadium in a significant World Cup warm-up game.

This is Bielsa’s first game on English soil since leaving Elland Road in February 2022.

At 70 years old, he is ready to face Thomas Tuchel’s strong England side. Despite a tough 5-1 loss to the United States in their previous match, Bielsa looks forward to the challenge.

Uruguay is currently ranked 17th in the FIFA world rankings, while England is in fourth place.

England recently became the first UEFA nation to qualify for the upcoming World Cup in North America. They had a perfect qualifying campaign, winning all eight Group K matches without allowing a single goal.

“Every match is an opportunity,” Bielsa said during a press conference. “Playing against the best always excites me.”

He acknowledged the high skill level of the English team but stressed that such tough matches are crucial for getting the best out of his players.

Bielsa “Excited” for Wembley match as Uruguay faces strong England

The match at Wembley serves as an important tactical test for both teams ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Under Thomas Tuchel, England has built a strong defensive record, keeping six consecutive clean sheets in all competitions.

If they stop Uruguay from scoring tonight, they will match their all-time record of seven shutouts in a row.

Tuchel is mindful of Bielsa’s unique playing style, noting that Uruguay’s effective qualification campaign, including wins over Brazil and Argentina, shows they can challenge top teams.

Uruguay will rely on Real Madrid‘s Federico Valverde to drive their offense in London.

Valverde has been in excellent form, scoring six goals in his last five matches, including a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.

Bielsa pointed out that Valverde’s ability to “unbalance opponents” is a crucial asset for La Celeste.

With the South Americans placed in World Cup Group H alongside Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia, tonight’s friendly is key for shaping their strategy against high-level European teams.

This match is the first encounter between the two nations since the 2014 World Cup, where Luis Suárez scored twice, eliminating England from the group stage.

Tactically, the Three Lions have had difficulty with this matchup, winning only 27% of their games against Uruguay historically.

For Tuchel, this match is also a chance to bring Ben White back into the team after a three-year absence. White was part of the Leeds squad that earned promotion under Bielsa in the 2019-20 season.

The match is set to kick off at 7.45 pm GMT, with a full crowd of 85,000 expected at Wembley.
