Hernán Darío “Bolillo” Gómez expressed honesty and determination after El Salvador’s 3-2 defeat to Suriname at Estadio Cuscatlán in a World Cup 2026 qualifier, according to Alerta Noticias.
“The other team was better today and played faster. Still, our team improved compared to the match against Guatemala. The competition is still open, and there are no clear favorites right now,” the Colombian coach stated.
He commended his players for their dedication despite the loss: “I have no complaints about the boys. They showed commitment and strength. We are still in the race, with four matches left to play. At this moment, there are no favorites.”
Gómez recognized the disappointment of the defeat but praised the support from the fans: “It hurts to lose, but I believe we have a strong team capable of continuing to compete. I feel for the fans; their applause today meant a lot, even if we didn’t win.”
Reflecting on the game, he noted areas that need improvement: “We struggle in one-on-one situations and with our attacking play. We need to work on these issues.” He also appreciated the bravery of younger players: “I liked the match. The young players are learning, and I value their efforts. In front of a large crowd, it’s easy to get nervous, but they maintained their composure.”
Despite the setback, Gómez conveyed a strong belief that La Selecta can continue to compete and maintain their hopes in the remaining qualifiers.
