Bolivia secured a significant 1-0 victory over Brazil in El Alto, earning a place in the intercontinental playoff for the 2026 World Cup. After the match, head coach Óscar Villegas ruled out the chance of bringing back veteran striker Marcelo Moreno Martins.
“In my opinion, this is not a serious matter. He hasn’t played in over a year. As the national team coach, I focus on players who are active and performing well. The first step for him would be to sign with a club, then we can see if he can contribute,” Villegas stated. He added, “This doesn’t diminish his achievements: he has been an outstanding player and a key figure in Bolivia, and we have great respect for him, but this topic feels a bit humorous to me.”
Regarding the upcoming playoff in Monterrey and Guadalajara, Villegas acknowledged the difficulty ahead. “We won’t have the altitude in the playoff, which means we need to be stronger. Monterrey is at 1,500 meters altitude, and we will aim to arrive in the best condition possible,” he explained.
The coach also discussed the team’s progress. “We aspire for a brighter future in football for our country and for players to enjoy their time with the National Team. Players need to be happy; we are gradually improving in this regard,” he noted.
On Brazil, Villegas emphasized their strength: “They did what many teams do when they visit El Alto: they prioritized players in better physical shape and then sought alternatives. They possess significant talent and impressive stature.”
He even shared a memorable encounter. “Before the match, we spoke with Carlo Ancelotti, who gave me a wonderful gift. He is a very important figure in football, and his kindness makes him even more admirable,” he revealed.
Meanwhile, Moreno Martins expressed his wish to return. “If God permits, I hope to be back. I feel fit enough for a comeback. We’ll see what unfolds. I cherish this experience and will assess it carefully,” he stated. The former captain also reaffirmed his connection to Bolivia: “Nobody needs to persuade me; my heart will always be with La Verde.”
