Borussia Dortmund has officially signed former Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuekmeka on a permanent deal. He will remain at Signal Iduna Park until 2030.
This transfer marks another addition to Dortmund‘s summer recruitment from the Premier League, with Chukwuekmeka joining the team after a loan period last season where he played a key role in reaching the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup.
The England under-21 player, 21, joins Dortmund for a fee of 25 million euros (approximately $29 million).
During his loan, Chukwuekmeka made 17 appearances for Dortmund, scoring once, and showed promise despite dealing with injuries.
In his statement, Chukwuekmeka expressed happiness about making Dortmund his home, pledging to work hard to achieve the team’s goals.
Chukwuekmeka, who was born in Austria, moved to England at a young age and developed through Aston Villa’s youth academy before signing with Chelsea in 2022.
Dortmund‘s sporting director, Lars Ricken, stated that the club is “delighted” to welcome Chukwuekmeka, who will enhance the quality and creativity of their midfield.
Additionally, Dortmund has secured Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland and Yan Couto from Manchester City during this transfer window.
Reports suggest that before the deadline day on Monday, Dortmund could make further Premier League signings, including Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino and Wolves striker Fabio Silva.
Jadon Sancho, a Manchester United winger with two previous stints at Dortmund, is also rumored to be in talks for a return to the Westfalenstadion.
On Tuesday morning, Dortmund announced the extension of coach Niko Kovac’s contract for another year, lasting until 2027.
