Recently, the Porto Alegre club replaced its coach, with Ramón Díaz stepping down in favor of Abel Braga. The 73-year-old coach was introduced to the press on Sunday and made a controversial statement.
In a conversation with sporting director D’Alessandro, Abel Braga made a homophobic remark regarding his team’s training shirts: “I said, ‘I don’t want my team training in pink shirts; they look like a bunch of gay people.’ I needed to lighten the mood with my group today, you understand. I want the guys to be in top shape.” While intending to be humorous, Braga could have opted for a less discriminatory joke.
