River Plate is looking into a temporary increase in the Monumental’s capacity to 91,218 seats as part of planned roofing work, as reported by Olé. The outgoing president, Jorge Brito, discussed this plan in an interview with Radio Mitre, lightly mentioning the capacity figure before confirming it as part of the official project led by presidential candidate Stefano Di Carlo.
“The capacity is around that number you mentioned… But seriously, it’s part of the project,” Brito noted. This number holds special significance for River supporters, as it recalls December 9, 2018 — the date of their Copa Libertadores final victory against Boca Juniors in Madrid.
With elections approaching, Brito took the opportunity to endorse Di Carlo, praising his involvement in the Tu Lugar en el Monumental ticketing system and highlighting the continuity offered by Andrés Balotta, Ignacio Villarroel, and Mariano Taratuty. “I believe he will not only be president but a great one,” Brito expressed.
Brito also looked back on his four-year tenure, which saw the club win three domestic titles but none internationally. “I wanted more trophies, but I’m content knowing we did our best for the members,” he remarked. He emphasized the club’s significant growth in infrastructure and overall development over the past 12 years, from Rodolfo D’Onofrio’s leadership to his own.
As River prepares for its next electoral phase, Brito stressed that the incoming leadership is not just inheriting past successes but is focused on expanding them. The idea of temporarily increasing the Monumental’s capacity ties the club’s modern goals to one of its most memorable moments in recent history.
