City officials in Brownsville have signed an agreement with the United Soccer League to create a professional soccer team. This marks an important step in bringing professional soccer back to the Rio Grande Valley, following the closure of the RGV Toros in 2023 after eight seasons.
A feasibility study will be conducted to determine if Brownsville Sports Park needs any upgrades to serve as the team’s home, should the project proceed. The USL is financing the study, allowing the city to advance without financial risk at this stage.
A steering committee of around 40 community members has been formed to oversee the process. This group includes representatives from the Brownsville Public Utilities Board, FC Brownsville owners, coaches, and former coaches. Their role is to provide feedback on establishing both men’s and women’s professional teams in the city.
This effort demonstrates Brownsville’s desire to join the trend of mid-sized U.S. cities investing in soccer as a means of fostering community identity and economic growth. Although it’s still in the initial phase, the agreement is a significant step toward bringing professional soccer back to the Valley, with local input playing a key role in the journey ahead.
