Defeat to Qarabag proved fatal.
Benfica faced a setback in their Champions League opener, leading to the end of their manager’s contract.
Details: Today, Rui Costa, the president of Benfica, announced on the club’s official website that Bruno Lage, the 49-year-old Portuguese manager, is no longer the head coach.
This decision came after Benfica’s disappointing 2-3 loss to Qarabag in the Champions League’s opening match.
“I want to inform everyone that we have reached an agreement with Bruno Lage, who will no longer be Benfica’s coach from today. I thank Bruno for his efforts and dedication over the past year. Unfortunately, it’s time for a change. We expect the new coach to be in place for Saturday’s match at Vila das Aves,” Rui Costa stated early Wednesday.
Bruno Lage took over Benfica in September last year and managed 56 matches, with 39 wins, 7 draws, and 10 losses.
