Bayer Leverkusen drew 3-3 with 10-man Werder Bremen on Saturday, missing out on new coach Erik ten Hag’s first league win.

Leverkusen led 3-1 and had a player advantage after Patrik Schick scored a Panenka penalty in the second half. Bremen’s Niklas Stark received a second yellow card for the foul that led to the penalty.

However, Leverkusen’s goalkeeper Mark Flekken misjudged a long ball, allowing Isaac Schmidt to score easily.

Bremen continued to push forward and equalized in the fourth minute of stoppage time, with Karim Coulibaly volleying in after the ball hit the crossbar.

At 18 years old, Coulibaly became Bremen’s youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history.

Leverkusen had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half, with Schick scoring in the fifth minute and debutant Malik Tillman adding another in the 35th minute.

Bremen was awarded a controversial penalty just before half-time, which Romano Schmidt converted, setting the stage for the drama in the second half.

The draw puts early pressure on Ten Hag as he works to build a team of new players, following a disappointing end to his time at Manchester United.

Leverkusen maintained their impressive away record, remaining unbeaten on the road in the league since May 2023.

In other matches, new Eintracht Frankfurt winger Ritsu Doan scored twice and assisted in their 3-1 win over Hoffenheim. Doan opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a curling shot and added another goal 10 minutes later, tapping in a pass from Jean-Matteo Bahoya, before assisting Can Uzun for the third goal.

Stuttgart defeated Borussia Moenchengladbach 1-0 at home, scoring late thanks to Chema Andres’ header, shortly after striker Nick Woltemade’s transfer to Newcastle was announced.

RB Leipzig rebounded from a 6-0 loss to Bayern Munich, winning 2-0 against Heidenheim with goals from Christoph Baumgartner and new striker Romulo Cardoso.

In Saturday’s late match, defending champions Bayern faced Bavarian rivals Augsburg.
