According to Cadena Cope, Sergio Busquets plans to retire at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season, ending a remarkable career. The 37-year-old midfielder is not likely to extend his contract with Inter Miami, where he’s reunited with Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, after more than 15 years at the top level.

A product of Barcelona‘s academy, Busquets became a key player for Pep Guardiola’s famous team, working alongside Xavi and Iniesta. He achieved great success with Spain, winning the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. Over his career, he has made more than 800 club appearances, nearly 150 international caps, and won an impressive 36 trophies.

In MLS, Busquets, despite his age, has shown his skill and calmness, helping younger teammates. However, the physical demands are noticeable. “I’m much closer to retiring than to continuing. I don’t have anything official about a renewal or a farewell,” he mentioned in late August. When asked about a return to Europe, he stated, “When I left Barcelona, I already knew I would not go back to Spain or Europe. I’m at an age where that stage is closed.”

The timing of his retirement depends on Inter Miami’s playoff performance. The team is currently fifth in the Eastern Conference with 52 points and six regular-season games remaining. An early exit would mean he retires in October, while a longer playoff run could extend his career into December.

Busquets joined Inter Miami in 2023 as part of Messi’s ambitious project, bringing experience and skill to the team. He has already won the Leagues Cup and Supporter’s Shield. His departure will mark the end of an era, leaving a significant gap in midfield that few have filled as effectively in modern football history.
