Nicky Butt thinks Manchester United should consider speaking to former teammate Roy Keane for the club’s vacant managerial position.

Manchester United dismissed Ruben Amorim as head coach on Monday after just 14 months. Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, the club has had 10 different coaches, both interim and permanent.

Butt has closely followed the challenges faced by his former club and has worked in the academy under ex-teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as head of first-team development.

The former United midfielder believes holding talks with another ex-player could be beneficial. While appearing on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, he expressed surprise that no one has approached Keane about the job.

Although Keane has not managed since 2011, he has often mentioned wanting to return. The 54-year-old was the most decorated captain in Manchester United’s history but left the club unexpectedly in 2005 after a disagreement with Ferguson.

“I can’t understand why Roy Keane never got a chance at Man United,” Butt stated. “He’s a friend, so I may be biased, but looking at his personality, his playing career, and his management record—he did extremely well at Sunderland.”

He added, “Given all the issues Manchester United has faced, it’s surprising that no one has talked to him about the job.”

Paul Scholes agreed with Butt, suggesting that Keane could even serve as an assistant. “Imagine how effective he could be working with someone like Martin O’Neill. If David Moyes had brought Roy in…”

Butt expressed continued disbelief at Keane’s exclusion from discussions for a role at Old Trafford. “When things have gone poorly, bringing Roy in could have made a difference. He’s very insightful and capable. He would also be smart enough to bring in a competent coach for areas where he might not excel.”

“Roy is very much in the mold of a Sir Alex Ferguson manager. He knows how to manage people and thrives on match days. I cannot understand why the club hasn’t spoken with him in the last five years.”

“While the club searches globally for the right candidate, the right person might be right there at home.”
