The Indian men’s football team is set to begin a new chapter under head coach Khalid Jamil, the first domestic coach in over ten years, during the CAFA Nations Cup 2025.

The Blue Tigers have been training in Bengaluru since August 15, with some players joining the national camp after their commitments to the Durand Cup.

Notably absent from the squad is Sunil Chhetri, India’s all-time top goalscorer.

Possible India lineup for CAFA Nations Cup 2025

Goalkeeper — Gurpreet Singh Sandhu:

Gurpreet, trusted as India’s top goalkeeper for the last ten years, returns to the squad after being overlooked by the previous coach. While he may not be a playmaker, his shot-stopping skills are likely to earn him the starting position.

Defence — Rahul Bheke, Sandesh Jhingan, Anwar Ali, Muhammed Uvais

Jamil’s defensive strategy relies on a low block, making Uvais a strong selection based on his height advantage. Bheke’s experience and ability to score from set pieces may secure him a spot over Hmingthanmawia Ralte. A solid pairing of Anwar and Jhingan is expected at the center-back positions.

Midfield: Lallianzuala Chhangte, Suresh Singh, Jeakson Singh, Ashique Kuruniyan — Jithin MS

The team is anticipated to utilize wing play, with Chhangte and Kuruniyan leading the attack from the flanks. Suresh and Jeakson will form a double pivot to counter Tajik attacks.

Jithin, known for his skills with NorthEast United, adds versatility on either side and is a viable No. 10 option in the absence of Brandon Fernandes.

Attack – Irfan Yadwad

Irfan Yadwad was signed by Chennaiyin FC from Bengaluru United in 2023, having scored 36 goals in 34 matches for the I-League 2 team under Jamil’s guidance. The coach aims to replicate that success at the national level.
