India will kick off its CAFA Nations Cup 2025 journey against host Tajikistan at the Hisor Central Stadium on Friday.
The Blue Tigers are in Group B, where they will first play Tajikistan, followed by matches against IR Iran on September 1 and Afghanistan on September 4. Group A includes Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan, and Oman.
The top teams from each group will meet in the final, while the second-placed teams compete for third place on September 8.
India’s head coach Khalid Jamil expressed his satisfaction with the team’s 10-day training camp in Bengaluru before the tournament.
“We had good preparation for the CAFA Nations Cup. Every player put in a lot of effort. We are pleased to be part of this tournament,” he stated.
Jamil acknowledges the challenges posed by the opponents, particularly Tajikistan (ranked 106th by FIFA), but emphasizes the need for India (ranked 133rd) to concentrate on their own performance.
“We know Tajikistan is a strong team, but we must focus on our game and be mentally ready,” Jamil added.
“Playing as a cohesive unit and improving with each match is essential. Building a strong team for future games involves focusing on both juniors and seniors.”
He also highlighted the significance of maintaining a positive mindset within the squad.
“We need to stay positive. Although it’s an away game against a good team, we must prepare accordingly and aim for a positive outcome. Every player needs to take responsibility. I believe we are ready for this challenge.”
Historically, India and Tajikistan have faced each other five times, with Tajikistan winning three. India’s sole victory against Tajikistan was in the AFC Challenge Cup 2008 final, where they triumphed 4-1.
That match took place 18 years ago, and Tajikistan is now a different team.
