Canada has expressed its willingness to welcome Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan to officiate matches in Vancouver, following his recent denial of entry into the United States. This decision could offer a potential opportunity for the experienced match official amid concerns over his participation in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A report from CAF-accredited journalist Micky Jnr indicates that Canadian authorities have no objections to Artan fulfilling his World Cup duties on Canadian soil. This development is seen as a lifeline for the referee, whose involvement in the tournament was previously cast into doubt following the visa issue.

Artan had been selected as one of the match officials for the World Cup; however, his ability to train or officiate in the United States was curtailed by the decision of US authorities. FIFA later confirmed that he would not be able to participate on American territory.

With Canada’s openness to hosting Artan in Vancouver, there lies the potential for an alternative path that would allow him to continue his role in the World Cup, pending final decisions from FIFA regarding tournament logistics.
