Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has supported manager Arne Slot’s decision to bench Mohamed Salah for two consecutive Premier League matches, emphasizing that no player receives special treatment based on past reputation.

Salah did not feature in the 2-0 win against West Ham United and was brought on as a substitute in the subsequent 1-1 draw with Sunderland.
Speaking to the media after the Sunderland game, van Dijk said that every player is expected to perform at a high level every week.

“You don’t have unlimited credit,” he added. While acknowledging Salah as a fantastic player and an important leader, van Dijk noted that the 33-year-old needs to raise his standards.

Liverpool is currently ninth in the league standings with 22 points from 14 games. The team trails first-placed Arsenal by 11 points.
