As the Australian Open approaches, much discussion has focused on Carlos Alcaraz and his quest for a Career Grand Slam. However, a recent surprise emerged when Alcaraz announced his split from long-time coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, during what seemed to be a typical offseason.

The announcement took the tennis community by surprise. Although there were hints of tension in their relationship, few anticipated this decision. The timing was particularly shocking: Alcaraz had just finished 2025 ranked No. 1 in the world, and Ferrero was honored as the ATP Coach of the Year.

Alcaraz Discusses Split With Ferrero

A month after the announcement, Alcaraz opened up about the split at his pre-tournament press conference in Melbourne. He stated:

“It was a mutual decision. In life, some chapters need to close, and we felt it was the right time. I’m grateful for the seven years with Juan Carlos. He played a big role in making me who I am today. I learned a lot. But we both decided to close this chapter amicably. No decision was made without our discussion. We approached it collaboratively.”

Ferrero Reflects on Communication Issues

Ferrero later acknowledged that better communication might have helped them stay together. He noted that both sides were often moving in different directions, leading to unresolved disagreements.

“We disagreed on certain things. As with any contract, each side wants what’s best for them. There were issues where we had differing views. Perhaps they could have been settled with more discussion, but ultimately, we didn’t have that and chose not to continue.”

What’s Next for Alcaraz

Despite the coaching change, Alcaraz has kept most of his support team intact. Samuel Lopez has stepped up as head coach, which Alcaraz sees as a positive step.

“Our routines haven’t changed. We continue focusing on areas for improvement compared to last season. I’m working with the same team as before, just one member is no longer with us. We kept the same plan but aimed to refine specific details.”

Alcaraz, recognized as one of the most talented players in tennis history, has yet to compete on the ATP Tour without Ferrero in his corner. The former world No. 1 coach was known for his passionate support and involvement in Alcaraz’s success.

While Alcaraz is still a major contender on tour, the tennis community will be keen to see how he adjusts, especially as he aims for significant achievements in the seasons ahead.
