After his US Open victory, Alcaraz was asked about his journey to winning a Grand Slam and reaching the top ranking. He said, “Honestly, since I won in Miami, I believed I could hold a Grand Slam trophy.”
“Before Miami, I thought I still needed to improve. I believed I could perform well in a Grand Slam, but not necessarily win it.”
“Once I won in Miami, I started winning important matches, and that gave me the confidence that I could win a Grand Slam.”
“Right now, I’m enjoying this moment and having the trophy. But I’m also eager for more achievements.”
“I want to maintain my position at the top for many weeks and hopefully for years. I’ll work hard again after this week and compete for more moments like this.”
Alcaraz on Enjoying Tennis Before the 2022 US Open
Looking back at the weeks leading up to the tournament, Alcaraz shared, “In Montreal and Cincinnati, I lost some of my joy. I felt the pressure and couldn’t smile on the court, which is something I usually do in every match and tournament.”
“I came here to enjoy myself and play with a smile because I love tennis,” he noted. “If I am happy and having fun, I’ll play my best tennis.”
“I want to thank my team, Juan Carlos [Ferrero], my family, and everyone who supported me during those tough times for helping me find joy again.”
Alcaraz has now outperformed Novak Djokovic in Grand Slam titles but, like Roger Federer, has yet to win an Olympic gold medal.
