Michael Carrick expressed his fond memories of Tottenham as he prepares to face them this weekend.
Manchester United will host Tottenham in the Premier League tomorrow, with interim coach Carrick taking on his former club at Old Trafford.
Carrick played for Tottenham for two seasons before transferring to Manchester United in 2006 for £18.6 million.
In a pre-match press conference, Carrick reflected on his time at Spurs and the transfer, saying, “It was pretty instant. I have really fond memories of Tottenham. I was there for what feels like a short time but really enjoyed it. Good team, Martin Jol was manager, a lot of things I learned in a short period.”
He added, “Coming here was a big jump and I felt that quickly. Once you step inside this place as a footballer, it changes you, from the first day walking into the dressing room and meeting the manager.”
Tottenham has had a tough Premier League season and currently sits 14th in the table. Thomas Frank is under pressure in his first season, although the team has advanced to the last 16 in the Champions League.
When asked about Spurs, Carrick said, “They certainly bring a challenge. The way they finished the game recently, they’ve had many players injured and a lot of changes to the team, which complicates things.”
He continued, “They’re getting players back and have strong attackers that aim to stretch defenses and attack the box. It’ll be a different game for us compared to what we’ve faced recently, but we are looking forward to it. The players have trained well this week. It’s important to stay grounded; we need to focus on the next match. It’s a big challenge ahead.”
