Celtic will host Falkirk at Celtic Park on Sunday in a Scottish Premiership match, aiming to narrow the gap at the top of the standings.

The Glasgow team is currently third with 45 points from 23 games, trailing leaders Hearts, who have 54 points after 24 matches.

Celtic comes into this game following a strong 4-2 win over FC Utrecht on January 30, which concluded their Europa League group-stage campaign. This victory secured their advancement to the play-off round, placing Celtic 21st in the overall Europa League standings.

Before this European match, Celtic drew 2-2 against Hearts on January 25, a game that saw them reduced to ten players after Auston Trusty received a controversial red card at Tynecastle.

Celtic team news

Manager Martin O’Neill faces challenges with a depleted squad, as several key players are unavailable. Trusty will miss the match due to a one-game suspension from the Hearts fixture, leaving Celtic with fewer options in defense.

Full-back Alistair Johnston is sidelined with a hamstring injury and is not expected to return until early March. Midfielder Callum Osmand is also out with a similar injury, likely missing the same timeframe.

Defender Cameron Carter-Vickers faces a lengthy absence due to an Achilles tendon injury, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the season. Additionally, Jota is still recovering from a muscle or ACL-related issue and is ongoing with his rehab, adding to O’Neill’s attacking challenges.

On a positive note, Benjamin Nygren has been in great form this season, scoring his 14th goal during the win over Utrecht, where he opened the scoring within six minutes and showcased his influence in attack.

January loan signing Tomas Cvancara, who played during the draw with Hearts, is also set to play again after a promising debut. In goal, Kasper Schmeichel is likely to start again after making several crucial saves in the previous match.

Possible Celtic starting XI: Schmeichel; Araujo, Murray, Scales, Tierney; Engels, McGregor, Nygren; Hyun-Jun, Cvancara, Maeda
